ABBÉ SAUNIÈRE

Priest at Rennes-le-Château from 1885 until his death in 1917. While renovating his church, thought to have discovered parchments, which lead him to a source of great wealth. No indications as to what but speculations range from biblical treasure once owned by the Templars to proof supporting claims to the throne by various royalist factions. Spent a huge amount of money for the times and for his official income. Renovated his church, built a villa and gothic tower, planted gardens, filled with exotic plants and birds. Entertained rich and famous people including the international opera star Emma Calvé. Refused to account for his expenditure to his bishop. The case went to the Vatican, who would not give a judgement until he talked to his bishop. Case deadlocked for several years. Died on eve of signing contracts for new, vaster building schemes. On his death, body laid out covered by a cloth edged with red pompoms, which people plucked off as they filed by to pay their respects. Died without a penny to his name, according to his will. All transferred to his housekeeper beforehand.
